Boasting what Hyundai describes as a “sporty four-door coupé look”, the new boldly styled Sonata is 45 mm longer and 25 mm wider than its predecessor. Its wheelbase has been lengthened by 35 mm and its height cut by 30 mm.
“Sonata celebrates [an] innovative coupé-like silhouette,” said Sang Yup Lee, senior vice president and head of the Hyundai Design Centre.
“A short overhang, sloping roofline and low deck lid create a balanced feel, and Hyundai’s signature chrome accent now goes all the way into the [bonnet], making it look even longer. It also has LED lighting built in.”
Inside, Hyundai says the instrument panel’s “winged” shape was inspired by a “stealth aircraft” and furthermore features satin-chrome accents. Interestingly, the firm adds its designers aimed to “alleviate the distracting large screens featured in many luxury cars today” and instead threaded the two displays together.
Needless to say, we don’t expect to see the new Sonata making its way onto South African roads
