Read the story: Why Americans square measure suddenly paying $550 per month for brand new cars
Here could be a sample of comments from our readers.
Kimberley Sunchuk: Cars these days don’t last like they wont to. They aren’t value shopping for any longer. And a great deal of mechanics square measure shady con artists. no one needs to upset the effort.
Michael DE Fortuna: New cars see their values depreciate well the second they’re driven off the ton. The investment simply isn’t worthwhile.
Robert Rosetta: it's stupid to shop for a brand new automotive. It is far better to buy a 1- or 2-year-old car with low mileage.
Donald Vetter: These are the same people who can't afford groceries because they had to keep up with the Jones'. Fiscal irresponsibility will not go away anytime soon in America.
Ken Kornfeld: My American brand vehicles are older, paid off and the money I save goes to travel!

John Thomas: Yet the average age of vehicles on the road is over 11 years. So while the monthly payment has gone up, folks are keeping vehicles much longer, thereby mitigating the impact of depreciation.
Andrew Goetz: Fools are driven by the "monthly payment" and not the total cost. The dealer is glad to comply with your request for a particular monthly payment. They'll just make you pay more of them.
Kenny Ray Cobel: Look at all these simpletons that believe a brand new car will create happiness...hmmmm perhaps for 2 weeks. Paying $40K for a car that's worth $10K 3 years later is the peak of American stupidity.
Alan Eosso: Oftentimes with incentives and favorable financing terms, it can be cheaper (payment to payment) to buy a new car over used. It doesn't get cheaper unless you can either steal it for super cheap or wait 2 to 3 model years to maximize depreciation losses. You've always got to do the math, especially when the market is wacky.
Erik Josephsen: That's why I lease. No money down and under $300 a month, and every 3 years I have a brand new car. Have never had to pay for tires, a brake job or even windshield wipers.
Crystal Fey: $550/month!!! You’re out of your mind. Buy a used car and stop the madness!!
Gary Davis: Anyone who needs to finance a car at more than a few hundred a month can't afford that car! You owe more than the car is worth from almost the minute you drive it off the lot.
Abbey Road: Prices of cars have also increased astronomically due to everyone wanting all the bells and whistles. All that technology going into cars isn't cheap
John Hayes: I haven’t bought a new car in 20 years. Certified pre-owned is the way to go.
Ant Hony: Everyone is trying to keep up with the Jones’s. You don’t need a new car and a huge house. Live within your means and enjoy life and extra free time versus always chasing the next big thing.
Justin Friedland: All depends on what you want... And your financial scenario. Leasing does seem like the future of most vehicles.
Taylor Horton: Because cash for clunkers destroyed the used car market in ways we are still feeling today. it was a scam to prop up car companies and make people feel good for being stupid.
Joe Szymanski Sr.: The cost for a pickup is 50-60 thousand. I'll keep mine till the wheels fall off.
